Perry calls for a national campaign to boost local businesses

Wednesday August 25 2010

Fine Gael Small Business Spokesman John Perry TD has called for a national campaign to support local businesses and encourage consumers to spend more locally.

"Small and medium enterprises have probably suffered the most in this recession. The banks are still refusing to provide essential credit and huge numbers of firms have gone under, or have laid off staff.

"Small businesses can clearly expect no help from the Fianna Fáil/Green Government, which is only concerned with bailing out the banks. This Government has created an economy where there is no confidence and no credit.

"The current Government remains the single biggest stumbling block to consumer confidence. People aren't spending precisely because they have no confidence that Fianna Fáil is working to secure the future of the economy.

"However, in the meantime consumers can play a small but significant role by supporting their local businesses. I recently pointed out that if every consumer makes a commitment to increase the amount they spend with local companies, even by a small amount, it would get cash flowing back into local economies.

"This 'adopt and save a job' approach would be a small way to make a big difference.

"Only Fine Gael has concrete plans to get the economy back on track, to generate hope and to create jobs. That's yet another reason why this Fianna

Fáil/Green Government must go, and go soon," he maintained.
