Leitrim's first 10k road race for N.W. Hospice
Wednesday May 12 2010
The first ever HalfMarathon and 10K road race in County Leitrim, in aid of North West Hospice, will take place in Manorhamilton on 11th September 2010 and will be launched in the Glens Centre on Thursday May 13th at 6.00pm
The walk/run will be a major event, aiming to attract over 500 people, both serious athletes as well as casual runners and walkers. The event is the brainchild of Maura Gallagher, a keen walker who observing the success of such events all over the country decided to organise one for North Leitrim. She is being ably assisted by an organising committee and together and with the blessing of the local athletic club they have devised a great run/walk approved by the Athletics Association of Ireland.
All funds raised will go to North West Hospice so the committee is currently busy raising sponsorship for the event to defray costs. The Hospice provides an invaluable service for people who face a life-threatening illness as well as vital supports for their families. Much of their resources are dependent on voluntary fundraising.
As well as raising money for a worthy cause the event is being organised to promote health and fitness in the community. To this end a training programme is being organized to get people motivated and this will involve mobilising people around the region in the months building up to the run. Personal Trainer Ronan McNamara from Sligo has volunteered to act a motivator for groups so come along and meet him at the launch.
Apart from getting people fit, it is also hoped this event will promote the North Leitrim Glens among visiting runners/walkers and their families who may stay in the area for the weekend, thereby having a positive economic impact on local businesses.
Generous sponsorship is already rolling in with pledges of more. Sponsors will receive significant publicity and recognition which would include the name of your business on all publicity material and on the website.
