Drumkeerin mudslide

Wednesday October 01 2008

Officials are set to continue monitoring the site of a bogslide in Drumkeerin which necessitated the removal of fish from the Abhann Ghearr river.

The slide began on Tuesday evening last week during the construction of road to the Garvagh Glebe North wind farm, a joint project between Coillte and Hibernian Wind Power, a subsidiary of the ESB.

Engineers at the site set about constructing three dams to contain the material and the slide was subsequently halted.

The 20 metre wide, four metre high mound of peat moved down a mountain, crossed a road and entered a small river which flows into Lough Allen.

Staff from the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board removed over a thousand fish from the river, of which 4km or 5km was affected.

A total of 13 turbines are planned for the site but none have yet been erected with work continuing on the construction of an access road.
