‘Only the start’ says in-form Amond
"I think this is only the start of it for this team" declared leading scorer Padraig Amond after he had dumped his former club Shamrock Rovers out of the EA Sports Cup with two goals in a stunning semi-final at the Showgrounds on Tuesday night last.
"We’ve a fantastic bunch of players-Joseph Ndo, who wasn’t playing, has been playing great and Richie Ryan has probably been the best player by a mile in the League of Ireland. In defence Alan Keane and Gavin Peers have been outstanding. I could name everyone in the team-they’ve all been playing well," said Amond.
The ex-Hoops striker brought his tally to twenty-three in all competitions by scoring a quick-fire equaliser after Shams had taken the lead and then struck for the winner four minutes into the second-half.
"This is a really imporant result for the club and we’re also delighted to get through for the gaffer (Paul Cook) because he went through a lot of heartache last year. The way we look at it is that the most important game is the next one, when the League Cup Final comes along we will take it as it happens," Amond said.
The Carlow-born frontman wants to score every time he goes on the pitch, but stressed that the most important thing was that Rovers won the game.
"This was great for the club and it is fantastic to get to another Cup Final. Hopefully, we can go one step further than the lads did last year (in losing the F.A.I. Cup Final to Sporting Fingal) and bring a bit of silverware back to the club which is badly needed," he added.
Amond stated that Rovers were on a great run and everyone wanted to work hard for each other.
"The last five minutes of defending was fantastic and that is the way we should play in every game. It’s easy to get up for Cup semifinals, these are the games you want to get up for," he said.
