Fiddlers Creek close in on league leaders Riverstown

Wednesday January 18 2012

FIDDLER'S CREEK are now only one point behind leaders Riverstown in Division One of the Sligo Rovers 11-A-side Astro Turf League after a night of contrasting fortunes for the top two.

Riverstown suffered their first league defeat when they were beaten 2-1 by the P.S.O. Vinny Boyd got Riverstown off to the best possible start when he shot home from just inside the box. Graham Tiernan then got his side level with a deflected shot and then Keith Hennessy scored their winner as he got in behind the Riverstown defence and calmly slotted the ball low past the keeper. Fiddler's had it far easier in their game as they routed Abbott Ireland 8-0. Lee Marshall got a hat-trick with Barry Mcloughlin bagging a double. Mark Rooney, Glen Shannon and Darren Kelly all got one apiece. That leaves Fiddler's one point behind Riverstown with a game in hand. A goal from Michael Mcnamara was enough to give S.P.H. a hard fought 1-0 win against the G.S.S.

Killanaskully Wanderers continue to lead the way in the Mccullagh Carpentry Division Two despite suffering their first league defeat of the season as they were beaten 2-1 by Hargadon's (Calry). Hargadon's opened the scoring in the game when Brendan Lowry headed in from a cross from Philip Mcloughlin

Barry Mullen went close to equalising for his side when he hit the post from inside the box. Lowry then doubled Hargadon's advantage when he scored with a now trademark free kick. Brian Murphy ensured a nervy finish for Hargadon's when he scored a late goal for Killanaskully but the Calry side held on for the win. That result means that Hargadon's are now only three points behind Killanaskully with a game in hand. Lang's Bar were 5-0 winners in their clash with Durkin's Pub. Micheal O'domhnaill and Peter Toner scored two each with Peter Mcgowan getting the other.

Coolaney Celts remain in title contention as they achieved a hard fought 21 win against SRFC Reserves. Trevor Mcguinn got both their goals with Kevin Egan pulling one back from the penalty spot for the Reserves.
