Cook: ‘Let’s win something

Friday August 27 2010

‘Let’s get behind the club and win something’ . . . that was the call from Sligo Rovers manager Paul Cook following the dramatic victory over Shamrock Rovers in last Tuesday night’s EA Sports Cup semi-final at the Showgrounds.

"The club have been telling me for ages how they want to win a trophy. The fans deserve it too and they should come out even more to support the team. The Management Committee have gone over the top in getting me extra money to get the likes of Boco back into the squad," he said.

"We’re doing alright, aren’t we ? " Cook mused after the game, but stressed that they were not "getting carried away."

"We are on a good run, we’ve got good players and a good squad. We want to be competitive. Shamrock Rovers are the benchmark at the minute and anyone at the game will say ‘yeah, we can be competitive," the Rovers boss added.

"It’s not about one person. It is not about me getting the team selection right, it is about 18 or 20 of us mucking in and getting a result for the club," Cook contended.

Speaking of in-form striker Padriag Amond who brought his tally to twenty-three for the season with two goals against his former club, Cook said the Carlow man was "on fire at the minute."

Asked what it meant to reach a Cup Final the Rovers manager replied: "We want to win some silverware. I said when I came to the club that I wanted to make people happy and bring trophies here. We are now in another Cup Final. The players deserve all the plaudits for this."

"I cajole them, I bully them and I shout at them! But, they are a credit to the club," he concluded.
