Cautious Rovers taking nothing for granted
Despite going into Friday night’s F.A.I. Ford Fourth Round tie against North West neighbours Finn Harps as overwhelming favourites Sligo Rovers are taking nothing for granted in the first ever Cup tie between the sides.
Harps may be in mid-table in the Airtricity First Division, but Rovers Assistant Manager Gerry Carr has seen too many shocks in knockout competition to be complacent.
"This is Harps Cup Final and they will be looking for a scalp. We’ve just got to prepare for the game as we do all others but it is a potential banana skin and we will treat them with the respect they deserve," said the 1994 Cup winner. Rovers will be without the suspended Conor O’Grady for the trip to Ballybofey.
Carr says their philosophy will not change and they are going to Finn Park to win the tie.
"We will play the way we always do and if the lads perform to the standard we would expect we should be okay.
"I don’t have to go into how the Cup can throw up shocks. The so-called lesser teams will always raise their game. The fact that is a local derby will give added interest but hopefully we will have enough about us to get the job done," said Carr.
Rovers ‘warmed up’ for the Cup with a scoreless draw against St. Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park on Friday last, a result the Rovers Assistant Manager described as fair.
"The players of late have been fantastic but to be honest we weren’t great against Pat’s. Anytime you pick up a point away from home is not too bad and we now just move on.
"We went there to win of course and given that we didn’t play as well as we can we nevertheless took the draw," said Carr.
