Calry make their point

The last time these sides met Manor scored five without reply in what was Joe Keaney’s first game in charge of the north Leitrim side in the Bee Park.
But it was a very different story on Sunday in Calry Community Field as Manor pulled a Super League point out of the fire after being a goal down at halftime. A hard fought first half of few chances saw Calry take the lead when Manor ‘keeper Martin Cleary failed to deal with a corner and Martin Flynn pounced to head to the net.
Darren O’Hara could have added a second for the Calry men straight away but his header sailed just over. Towards the end of the half Manor began to find their rhythm with Paul Óg Ferguson going close and Diarmuid Clancy putting Pat Sweeney through but he wasted a chance to test the home-side’s ‘keeper.
The second half was one of total domination by the Manor lads and they could be regarded as somewhat unlucky to have only one goal to show for their efforts, even though at times their final ball was either too long or too high.
Manor got the equaliser after the 52nd minute when Paul Boylan was bundled off the ball and Brian McDonald’s penalty was inch perfect. Afterwards Manor peppered the Calry posts to no avail with Alan Hickey heading just wide; Paul Boylan having a shot well saved; Colin Ryan seeing his shot blocked and Gary Hickey clipping the post.
There was one piece of final drama when Manor was awarded a second penalty in the final minute but this time Brian McDonald’s penalty was saved by Calry ‘keeper McGovern, to earn his side a share of the spoils. Following McGovern’s vital stop the ball rolled out to Manor’s Paul Boylan who to the gasps of everyone hit the ball wide of an open goal when he had a gilt edged chance to claim all three league points for his side.
