Brennan brothers strike late to take Ballymote to the top

Friday November 20 2009

Ballymote Celtic took over as clear leaders in the Andrew Mullens Sligo Pallets Premier League

but they left it late at home to Carrick Town who were leading with seven minutes remaining thanks to an Ian Mc Creevey goal.

Then Celtic’s leading scorer Mark Irwin rattled in the equaliser and with the clock running down up stepped the brothers Niall and Gerry Brennan to earn all three points in a game that was not for the faint of heart.

Cartron United had the opportunity if they won this encounter to move into third spot but someone forgot to tell Gurteen Celtic and thanks to a Neill Conlon screamer of a goal Cartron were left with nothing but frustration on what yet once again, might have been.

BOYLE IN CRUISE CONTROL

In the Sligo Southern Hotel Super League Boyle Celtic cruised into second spot defeating Coolera Rovers by four goals to two. Aughanagh Celtic thanks to a Paul Simon goal shared the points with Strand Celtic who replied through the boot of Damien Scanlon.

Plenty of shocks in the Cleary Landscapes & Pitch Maintenance Division One Coolaney United toppled MCR of top spot with strikes from Jonathan Gilligan and Peter Dwyer insuring all three points for the home side.

Merville United away to Chaffpool Rovers held a minute’s silence prior to kick off in honour of the late Rory Kilcullen. The game itself was a cracker with Chaffpool Rovers claiming all three points in this seven goal thriller, Kevin Deighnan scored two with Barry Gilhooley and Brendan Touhy adding the rest. David Blain scored a brace for Merville and Gary Finan added a third but the day belonged to Chaffpool Rovers and Merville suffered their first League defeat of the season.

CLARKE HITS HAT-TRICK FOR ROVERS

Darragh Clarke netted a hat trick and Damien Kelly rounded things off to give Western Rovers a deserved win away to north Sligo side Maugherow United who replied with a goal from Nigel Brady. Aclare Celtic could not provide a ground for their clash with Real Tubber reserves and the match was forfeited.

HARPS WIN SHOOT-OUT

The FAI Umbro Junior Cup third round saw Carbury FC make the long haul to Roscommon side Dysart only to be told the grounds were unplayable despite being told the opposite before they travelled.

Arrow Harps in the same competition travelled to Dunmore and both sides were locked at two all after ninety minutes and eventually Arrow Harps emerged victorious by six goals to five in the penalty shootout.

City United with two goals each from Gareth Kelly and Lee Marshall along with strikes by Keith Nibbs and Packie Callaghan insured their place in the third round at the expense of Ballisodare United.
