Sligo boxer, Alan Reynolds, is considering turning professional following his defeat to reigning champion, Con Sheahan in the 91kg Elite National Championship final at the National Stadium on Friday last.

Reynolds, who was competing in the final for the 10th time, gave it his best shot but Sheahan withstood all the Sligo fighter had to offer and emerged with a 10-3 win.

Reynolds was 2-0 down after the first round and had a real go in round two. Sheahan took all the knocks, however, and dominated the third round to retain his title in good style.

It was no mean achievement by the thirty-two years old Sligoman, however. It was his tenth senior final and he won seven of them – quite a record.

‘Alan will take a little while to consider where to go from here but turning professional is definitely an option that he will look at’, reported the boxer’s coach and brother, Stephen.

‘His style of fighting probably doesn’t suit the amateur game but he could certainly make an impact at cruiser weight in the professional ranks. He’s had a brilliant career at amateur level so maybe the time is right to move. He hasn’t made a decision yet but it’s something he’s considering’.

Meanwhile, local IT student, John Tighe, from Ballymote, continued his rapid progress by winning a gold medal at an Under 18 international tournament over the week-end.

It was a good week-end, too, for Mairead Keane from Mullinabreena who reached the final of a Novice event at the National Stadium on Saturday before losing 13-10 in a thrilling contest.
