Alan Reynolds fromBallinacarrow boxingclub secured his place in thenational elite championshipsfinals next Friday night withan impressive display ofpunching power and ringcraft at the NationalStadiumon Friday last.
He fought slick southpawJimmy Sweeney from Driminaghboxing club who had none otherthan Olympic gold medalistMichael carruth in his corner.The Sligo boxer used his jab wellalong with solid right crosses andwas 3 1 up at the bell. The secondwas by far the best for Reynolds ashe forced a standing count andpicked up some more points.
Sweeney battled back in the lastround but a late rally from theBallinacarrow boxer kept him infront and booked his place in thedecider where he will meetdefending champion Con Sheehan.He beat national intermediatechampion Paddy O'Shea in thequarter finals 10 3.
Chris Devaney also won hisquarter final bout beating MartinSweeney from Dunboyne boxingclub 12 0 but lost out to CathalMcMonegal 10 3 in the semi final.
Mairead Keane from theBallinacarrow also boxes thisSaturday in the national novicechampionships finalsMeanwhile, Michael Faney wonhis first title in the youth 260Kgdivision beating a veryexperienced Owen Mc Donaghfrom St Annes Westport 10 pointsto 6. Eamonn Tighe fromBallymote hardly broke sweat andwon after he delivered some veryhard and well placed body shotsforcing the referee to stop thecontest in the first. These ladsalong with rising star Shannon OHara will box in next month'snational championships.
