Innisfree Wheelers Cycling Club
Members from the club have been kept very busy over the last number of weekends between club activities locally and attendance at various sportive events. Last Saturday week August 14th John Delorey,John O Connell,Brendan Brogan and John Greene attended the Sheaffrey Challenge in Westport.
This event is always an enjoyable but very tough event hels over a testing 75 mile route through some stunning countryside in the area around Leenane. All of the members aquitted well of themselves at the event and their contribution to the event commended by the organisers of the event for making the long journey to take part.
Last weekend another group of members made the trip to Clare to take part in the Etape tour on closed road stage in the Ennis area.Brendan Brogan,Pam Benson and Eddie Ryan represented the club in what was another enjoyable event.
On the Time Trial circuit our members were also busy.Last Tuesday evening Collette Hennigan gained enough poitns on the last evening of the Connacht League to take the Ladies Section.Unfortunately it was the opposite for Seamus Mc Gowan who had put in some great displays,as always over the course of the League, but was pipped on the last evening. On the local time trial circuit the very successful League coordinated by Sligo Triathlon Club come to a finish this week.Great displays during the League by Stephen Mullane,Paul Flynn,Enda Scanlon and Eddie Ryan but to name a few who took part.Well done to all for participating and hopefully it will continue to develop another aspect of the club.
At Community Games we certainly had one of the highlights of the year when Edel Burke came good yet again and took home a Bronze Medal for County Sligo. This is no mean achievement at a competition which has such a high level of competition. We wish Edel the very best when she carries the club colours to the National Youth Road Championships to be held this coming weekend in Coalisland hoste by Island Wheelers.
We also set our sights on the next club event which will be held on Sunday 5th September with both 80km and 150km options.A good number of members this year should be now well up for the 150km route and we hope that this will be the case.Members are requested to spread the word locally about this event in order that a good number of participants are present on the day.
Training continues for the Ladies event which is down for the September 25th.More Ladies are requested to turn up for the training spins which are currently being staged on Wednesdays at 6.30pm from Carraroe and 10.30am on Saturdays from Sligo I.T.
Please also put September 25th in your diary as a Club Function will be held in the Clarion Hotel on the night of the ladies cycle. This is both to act as a fundraiser for the Sligo Cancer Services and also to celebrate the year gone by for the club.Tickets at 30euro each which will include Buffet Meal and Entertainment will be limited to 120 so members are requested to purchase these asap.Members are encouraged to attend this very special night for the club to honour those who have achieved so highly over the last year.
We also wish to acknowledge in the notes this week of the sad passing of our former member of the club Triona Fowley Manorhamilton and Dromahair whose funeral took place last Sunday.Triona took part in a number of the club events in the early days of the club and her contribution will be always remembered.
We extend our sympathies to her husband Martin and two young children Mikhala and C.J.along with her extended family in particular her immediate family in Dromahair.
