Cullen leads strong Irish team for European championships

Friday December 04 2009

As the build-up to the European cross country championships in Santry on December 13th gathers momentum, it has been confirmed that Sligo will have strong representation on the Irish squad.

The Irish team will be led by North Sligo athlete, Mary Cullen, while Sligo’s David Kelly has been named as second reserve on the men’s senior team. Cullen, who is regarded as a leading medal contender, will be joined on the ladies senior team by Sli Cualann duo, Fionnuala Britton and Deirdre Byrne, Linda Byrne and Ava Hutchinson from Dundrum South Dublin and Raheny Shamrock’s Orla O’Mahony.

The Sligo runner, who was just pipped for a medal in the European cross country championships in Brussels last year, is going into the race in peak form, having produced a succession of impressive performances since returning from injury. She won the Gerry Farnan Memorial Race at the Phoenix Park and the inter-county cross-country championships at Kilbeggan and also finished fourth in a top class international race in Spain.

The SPAR European cross country championships will take place in Ireland for the first time on December 13th in Santry Park, Dublin. Tickets can be purchased from www.ticketmaster.ie
