Hurlers chase Rackard Cup glory

Friday June 25 2010

On what will be a huge weekend for Sligo GAA, the county’s hurlers will be hoping to stay on course for Rackard Cup glory when they take on Armagh in the semi-final of the All-Ireland competition at Breffni Park, Cavan, on Saturday (throw-in 5pm).

Sligo won the coveted title two years ago and are back on the glory trail again, despite losing their opening game against London.

The return of Colin Herrity has given the team added firepower up front and the manner in which they overcame Monaghan and Louth in the last two rounds suggests that the squad has rediscovered its confidence.

Armagh, regarded as favourites for the title, will be Sligo’s toughest test to date but the Yeats County have built up a bit of momentum over the last two rounds and are going into Saturday’s game with renewed confidence.

‘Armagh are a very strong team but we don’t fear them’, said Hurling Board Chairman, Tom Brennan. ‘We’ve come on a lot since losing to London in the first round and the lads are playing with a lot of confidence’ Sligo will, however, be without their ace marksman, Keith Raymond, who is still sidelined with an ankle injury and midfielder, Ciaran Brennan, is also unavailable.

The liklihood is that Sligo will start with the team which played so well against Louth last Saturday, meaning that Liam Reidy and Alan Cawley, will continue to operate in the midfield engine room.

Jamie Kenny and Mark Burke will fill the key central roles in the backline while the in-form Herrity will be joined up front by the lively Larry Cadden, who grabbed two goals last week, Damien Burke, Mark Gordon and Cian Hackett
