GAA NEWSROUND

Friday July 16 2010

TOURLESTRANE: Pride of place this week goes to our u14 boys who won the County c title on Thursday last with a fantastic team performance. The management team were full of praise for all of the squad in the way the applied themselves to training all year and improved in every game culminating in a fantastic second half performance in the final to achieve their goal of a county title.

Every one of the players on the squad deserves great credit for how they have improved their skills individually and as a team.

We received the Divison 1 league trophy following our victory over St Johns and attention for the senior football team now turns to the Connacht league While all eyes are on the Connacht senior football final this weekend we will have 3 of our girls in Connacht Final action on this Friday when Katie Walsh, Grainne Carty and Mary Walsh represent Sligo U16 girls in the connacht final against Galway in Milltown at 7p.m. We wish al the girls the best of luck and hope they give the lead to our senior Footballers and we’ll have 6 new connacht medal in the parish by next week.

The club extends best wishes to Kevin Walsh and his squad, including our own Brian Kennedy, Eamonn O’Hara and Gary Gaughan in the Connacht Final on Sunday next. We will be selling tickets at 9pm on Thursday night in the clubhouse, this is the only chance to purchase tickets as we must return unsold tickets on Friday to the county board however tickets are also available all week from Killornas in Tubbercurry and in Super Valu Tubbercurry from 12 to 2.30pm on Saturday.

Our senior hurlers returned to winning way at the weekend with a great victory over Naomh Eoin on Sunday last. There were five differen scorers Pat Quin top scoring with 0-6, Joe Quinn 0-4, Sean Lynch 1-1, Aiden Walsh 0-3, and Jerome Quinn 0-2. We are at home to Calry on Saturday next in round 3.

On Monday next the 19th we host St mary’s in the U16 a Football championship, this will be a real test for Anthony Brennan’s squad as Mary’s are the undoubted favourites for the u16 championship, but our lads have put in a great effort in trinaing over the last number of months and are well prepared.

The club wishes to extend sympathy to the Henry family Curry on the passing of a great GAA man in Owen Henry recently. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a annam dilis.

SLIGO HURLING BOARD

Two matches in Round 3 of the SHC were played at the weekend. On Friday, Tubbercurry entertained Western Gaels in an exciting game which eventually finished all square, Tubbercurry 2-9, Western Gaels 1-12. In the weekend’s other game, Tourlestrane proved too strong for visitors Naomh Eoin, winning on a 1-16 to 1-3 scoreline. Naomh Eoin entertained Calry/St Josephs in a rearranged Round 2 fixture last evening (Tues); the result was not to hand at time of writing.

This Saturday, round 4 of the SHC takes place. The games are Naomh Eoin v Tuubbercurry in Kent Park at 2pm, Tourlestrane v Calry/St Josephs in Tourlestrane at 4pm, and Western Gaels v Coolera/Strandhill in Enniscrone at 7pm. There are two games in the u14 league scheduled for this evening (Wed). Naomh Eoin entertain Easkey in Kent Park at 7pm, while Coolera/Strandhill face Glencar/Manorhamilton in Ransboro, also at 7pm. Also this evening, the U12B league commences.

Drumcliffe/Rosses Point play Castleconnor in Oxfield, while Calry/St Josephs host St Marys-Kiltoghert. This is the first time that we have introduced a B league in u12 hurling in order to encourage the participation of newer club sides. We wish them well in the league.

The first u10 hurling blitzes of the year take place this Saturday. Easkey host Castleconnor, Tubbercurry and Tourlestrane at 11.30am. The other blitz will involve Calry/ St Josephs, Coolera/Strandhill, Drumcliffe/Rosses Point and Naomh Eoin. The venue/time for the latter blitz has to be confirmed.

ST. MARY’S

Saturday Morning coaching continues every Saturday morning from 10.30am until 12pm, all are welcome, so if your child is age 5 to 12 years and would like to enjoy Gaelic games in a fun environment bring them along. Also the VHI Cúl camps are running during the summer and there is one in Kent Park on the week beginning the 19th July.

Minor training continues on Tuesdays at 7.30pm. We need all players to attend training. The U-16 side had a comprehensive win over St. John’s at Kent Park on a scoreline of 5-15 to 2-5 on Monday evening 5th July last in the first round of the ‘A’ Championship. They play away to Tourlestrane on Monday evening next with a throw-in time of 7pm. We ask supporters to get behind the team.

The U-14 side suffered a defeat in the County Final on Friday night last as they lost out to Tubbercurry on a scoreline of St. Mary’s 1-9 Tubbercurry 2-7. Leading by six points midway through the second half following a goal by Ryan McManus, Tubbercurry rallied and the concession of a goal with five minutes left only two points between the teams. The concession of a second goal in injury time put Tubbercurry infront and this was to be the final score of the match.

We congratulate Tubbercurry on their win and we also congratulate this group of St. Mary’s players who will no doubt bounce back from this next year. This group played in three finals this year winning two, the Féile and the League. We thank the management team of Aidan Rooney and TJ Kilgallon for their Trojan work with this side. Our under 14 team represented Sligo at the Feile na nÓg competition which was held in County Derry the weekend before last. We had the honour of being hosted by the Castledawson club, where we were recieved and treated brilliantly from start to finish.

Our weekend started early on Friday morning when we departed from the clubhouse at 8.30am and hit the road to Castledawson, we played our host club early on Friday afternoon, a game we won. It was then back on to the bus and off to the City of Derry for the Feile parade which started in Celtic Park and weaved through the hills and streets of Derry, past the reviewing stand outside the Guild hall before finishing at the University Ground. Then it was back to Castledawson, where the team went to the host parents and our mentors and large band of supporters went to their accommodation.

Early start on Saturday where we had more group games, against Craigbane from Derry and Enniskillen Gaels, the Fermanagh Feile Championships, we came through both these games with wins and were now the group winners which meant a semi-final spot againt De La Salle, the Waterford Champions. This game was scheduled for the picturesque Slaughtmanus looking down on the Atlantic from the Sperrin Mountains. So Saturday afternoon it was back on the bus and off to Slaughtmanus where we were scheduled to play at 6.00pm. De La Salle were a bigger and more physical team and we struggled to get a foothold, although credit to our team who never stopped trying right to the final whistle, where the odyssey ended for this fantastic bunch of players. Back on the bus, where we listened to the final few minutes of the Sligo v Galway replay and I'm sure all of the Sperrins heard the roar that came from the bus on the final whistle, this helped lift the spirit of the players and mentors also. Then it was back to our host club who had some very fine food and entertainment ready for us, with a novel horse racing event which saw all of our players compete against the local and the St Brides ladies club from Louth who were also hosted by Castledawson. Sunday morning after mass, we had a farewell cup of tea at the Castledawson clubhouse where we presented our gift to the Club and the host parents for the fantastic hospitality the showed us right over the weekend. Castledawson also presented us with a present to mark our visit.

Finally on behalf of the club a huge thanks to TJ Kilgallon and Aidan Rooney who prepared and managed this team, to our brilliant band of travelling supporters, to all our sponsors who helped make this trip possible.

Training continues on Wednesdays only for the U-10's.

The Senior Team had a hard fought win against a determined Eastern Harps outfit on Saturday evening last in a match played in persistent torrential rain. The Junior team lost out to Castleconner on a scoreline of St. Mary’s 2-5 Castleconner 3-5 on Sunday afternoon The Juniors face an away trip to Shamrock Gaels this Friday evening with a throw-in time of 8pm. Training continues this week for all Senior and Junior panellists.

FRIENDS OF SLIGO FOOTBALL

Congratulations to our gallant Senior footballers, who defeated Galway to qualify for the Connaught final in Castlebar next Sunday. This scribe was watching the match in Turkey having changed holidays for the original game and the backdrop could not be much different watching the match as the summer sun set in the Aegeon sea and in contrast to the rain and wind in Markievicz Park.

A text from a friend before kick off advising Tony Taylor was out injured and 2 more changes were worrying coupled with our record in replays. My confidence was boosted by the belief in this team and my recollection that the last time Sligo won a replay I was on my first holiday abroad. So next Sunday let everyone in Sligo get behind our team they represent us and all that is good about Sligo and we need a lift now. So best of luck to all on Sunday. Bearing in mind then extraordinary conclusions to big matches last weekend no doubt the Sligo players will appreciate the need to keep going to the final whistle.

On the plane going to Turkey the morning after the first Sligo v Galway game and reading the reports in the papers I was extremely annoyed at the comments of Galway manager, Joe Kernan about Sligo off the ball tactics, which appeared wide of the mark Thankfully both Kevin Walsh and Tommy Brehony in the SLIGO CHAMPION responded admirably to these allegations and the Sligo players responded in the best way of all by beating Joe’s charges.

Congratulations to David Kelly on winning the Gaelic Football Player of the month for June – a richly deserved award. Earlier this year when David was selected on the Third Level Colleges All Star team I predicted that would not be his last award this year and I believe there will be even more this year.

We in Friends of Sligo Football appreciate that the continued and welcome progress in the Championship involves additional costs and we appeal to our supporters to contribute whatever you can to ensure our preparations are nor curtailed for financial reasons. We recommend our members contribute to CLUB SLIGO.

We extend our sympathy to the family of Owen Henry, Curry, who died recently. Owen was a wonderful club player, official and Mentor in his club but he was also a very active community man. On the football field he was delighted to win that County title in 1972 in the company of some GAA greats. Many a full back stepped out in opposition to Owen only to finish the game with his reputation tarnished as Owen’s side steps left him bewildered. Anytime Curry or Sligo were involved in a big match the Henry home and its environs were well bedecked in the relevant colours.

At a time of great excitement in Sligo it is commendable that a number of GAA people are still to the fore in supporting worthwhile charities in particular the Pauline Whittington cycle from Dublin to Tubbercurry when among the cyclists were Stephen Gilmartin’s parents Gerry and Margaret and Stephen’s sister and bearing in mind this was the eve of the Sligo Galway match and 3 days before their departure on holidays it is testament to their commitment to this worthy cause. Other notable Sligo supporters participating included John Brennan Cloonacool, who travels to Sligo games all over including New York.

Also we commend Niamh O’Grady and Kirstie Hannon from Gurteen, who are travelling to Uganda on charity work and they are noted footballers and supporters but are prepared to make sacrifices for those in need .

TUBBERCURRY

Our Senior team played their final game in the league on Saturday last away to St. Molaise Gaels. The final score was 1-5 to 0-5 to Molaise Gaels. The result of this game did not matter as both teams are now promoted to Division 1.

The Senior hurlers drew with Western Gaels on Friday evening 2-9 to 1-12. They play Naomh Eoin next on Saturday 17th July at 4.00pm away.

Our junior team were defeated by Bunninadden 2-10 to 0-10 on Monday last. They also played Easkey at the weekend and won out on a score of 2-11 to 0-13. Their next game is against Coolaney/Mullinabreena on Friday 16th at 8.00pm. Our U-16 boys are out on Monday 19th July in the second round of the championship and play St. Farnan’s away. Please Support.

Pride of the parish goes to our U-14 team who won the A Championship Final on Friday last in Markievicz Park. Tubbercurry found themselves trailing to St. Mary’s by 6 points in the second half but pulled it back to 2 points with a minute to go. However their never die attitude paid off and a late goal sealed the victory for them. Final Score 2-7 to 1-9. Well done to the management team of Pat Gilmartin, Brian Healy, Tony Walkin, Roger McCarrick and to everybody else involved.

Best of luck to Kevin Walsh and the Sligo Team in the Connacht Final on Sunday next especially our own club men Stephen Gilmartin, David Kelly and Colm McGee. Tubbercurry GAA Race Night in Killinaskully on Saturday 17th July at 10.00pm.

ST. PAT’S

St. Pat's officially won the Division 3 league on Sunday last in Tourlestrane, on a score-line of 2-10 to 0-10. The league this year was decided on which ever team performed consistently the best, and Pats proved that with an unbeaten run of 14 games. Congratulations to team and management, and hopefully this success will carry on into championship. The Junior team will play away to Bunninaden next Friday evening at 8pm. Best of luck to the Sligo Senior team next weekend in Castlebar
