Dettori links with Sligo winner

Wednesday August 24 2011

FRANKIE DETTORI, one of the most iconic personalities in racing, would hardly have had the humble surroundings of Sligo Racecourse on his radar during a glittering career, but the winner of the feature event at Sligo on Tuesday last had a very definite link with the top jockey.

Dodging Bullets, winner of the Rosses Point Handicap, was bred by Dettori, and followed up on his recent success at the Galway festival to land the feature race in good style.

Backed in from 9/2 in the morning to 11/4 second favourite, the winner was given a perfect ride by Ben Curtis, gradually working his way to the front before holding off the challenge of Hisaabaat in the final furlong.

'It looked like a competitive race beforehand but Ben gave him a super ride', reported a delighted trainer, Andy Oliver.

The fixture got under way with a thrilling finish to the opener, the Wednesday 28th September at Sligo Auction Race. Blue Mimosa (11/4 jnt fav), a course and distance winner in June, got home by a neck from Legal Peace and Blue Amadeus.

The winner was trained by Kevin Prendergast and ridden by Declan McDonagh who went on to complete a double aboard Gagnant in the Sligo Race Supporters

The winner was just beaten by Cool Athlete at Tipperary on his previous start and justified favouritism here as he came from the back of the field with a perfectly timed run in the straight, staying on well to beat Bubbly Belini by half a length.

'He has been a joy to train all season. It's such a joy to train a horse who tries his heart out', said winning trainer, Pruenella Dobbs.

Royal Intruder won five races in England but was still without a win in Ireland until last week, finally breaking his duck when he took the www.countysligoraces.com claiming race. Trained by Shane Donohoe and ridden by Fran Berry, the winner held off the challenge of the fast finishing Darsal Wane. It was returned at the generous odds of 7/1

One of the best backed horses of the evening was Indian Landing which was backed from 6/1 to 7/2 joint favourite and duly obliged in the Follow Sligo on Facebook handicap over six furlongs.

The Tracey Collins trained three years old, who was having his first start over six furlongs, took up the running two and a half furlongs out and sprinted to an easy seven lengths win under Ronan Whelan.

Well-known national hunt trainer, Noel Meade, sent out a flat winner when Leroy Parker took the Derrinstown Stud Aprentice Handicap with Emmet McNamara aboard. Despite drifting badly left on the run-in, the winner, who was returned at 6/1, held on well to beat 8/1 shot, the Drunken Dr. by a length and a half.

Trainer, John Oxx, who scored a double at the previous Sligo meeting, struck again at the Cleveragh track when Narjawa won the Glencar Maiden.

Despite drifting in the betting, she stayed on strongly to get the better of 9/4 favourite, Harangue from the Dermot Weld stable. The winner was ridden by Johnny Murtagh.
