TEAM NEWS: Pierce Purcell Shield:The Pierce Purcell team had a magnificent 3-2 win over Galway Bay in the Connacht semi final on Saturday evening last. Having lost to the same opposition last year, this was always going to be a difficult fixture for Paul Keyes and his team. With three matches in Rosses Point it was vital to get early pts on the board. Michael Barrett and Gerry McManus were first out and duly obliged playing outstanding golf to win their match 5/4. The second home win was provided by the very consistent pairing of Aidan Doyle and Joe Finnegan who saw off their opponents on the 14th to finish 5/4. Having lost the two matches in Galway, Club Captain Pat Forkan and partner Michael McNamara secured the decisive victory with a strong finish which included a birdie at the 16th to finish 2/1.
The team now goes forward to the provincial final which will be played at Castlebar Golf Club on the 7th/8th of August. Team: Michael Barrett/ Gerry McManus, Pat Forkan/Michael McNamara, Aidan Doyle/Joe Finnegan, Tom Cuddy/Keith McLoughlin, Shane Flaherty/Kevin McManoman.
CECIL EWING SHIEL: D:Donal Barry's team fell at the first hurdle last weekend going down 3 _ - 1_ to Ballina in horrendous weather conditions. Indeed the two matches in
Ballina were called in at one stage due to flooding on several greens. Having secured two wins in Rosses Point, the experienced Ballina team duly clinched the tie winning the first match at home after the rain delay. John McHugh and Eugene Henry secured the only win for the Co Sligo team.
SENIOR CUP:The Senior Cup team captained by David Dunne travel to Ballinasloe GC on the weekend of the 17th/18th July for Zone qualifier. David has a very strong squad assembled and County Sligo will be among the favourites to lift the title with players of the calibre of Gary McDermott, Barry Anderson and Rory McNamara to call on. The team has a good blend of youth and experience, the senior players David Dunne, Seryth Heavey and Gary McDermott have the know how at this level, which will be of great benefit to the youngsters in the panel. Good luck to David and the lads and any support on the day will be much appreciated.
Panel: Gary McDermott, Barry Anderson, Rory McNamara, Seryth Heavey, David Dunne, Gerard Finnegan, Stephen Brady and Stefan O’Hara. Barton Shield:A great victory by our Barton Shield team who produced a spirited display with some excellent golf to capture the Zone Connacht semi final at Ballinrobe Golf Club last weekend.
The format for the competition consisted of the 8 leading qualifying teams from Saturday playing the quarter finals on Sunday morning with the winners contesting the semi final on Sunday afternoon. Following their success in the qualifying round, Co.Sligo beat Castlebar in the quarter final by 1 hole.
The semi final against the Ballinasloe saw Co.Sligo produce some great golf to record a convincing win by 6 holes. Well done to captain Seryth Heavey and all the team who now go on to play Galway GC in the Connacht finals in Castlebar on August 7th/8th. Panel: Seryth Heavey/Barry Anderson, David Dunne/Gary McDermott – Gerard Finnegan, Stephen Brady.
Team Co-ordinator Aidan Doyle has all Team information and updates on the club website. SUMMER BBQ: Even though the sun didn’t shine for the Summer BBQ on Friday evening last the large attendance still enjoyed a great evenings entertainment.
