Castle Dargan Golf Club: High scoring during Open Week
Open week at Castle Dargan came to a close on Sunday last with the staging of the Wassies Chipper Single stableford competition. There was a good turn out of members and visitors over the week and all enjoyed the quality of both the course and the resort. Although the weather was both windy and wet at times it did not take away from the scoring with some remarkable cards returned daily.
On Monday the Cullen/Connolly sponsored competition was won by P Coughlan (23) with 37pts. Phelim Foley (20) was second with Fergal Mc Loughlin (14) third. Tuesday was also sponsored by Cullen/Cawley and the windy conditions did not deter Paul McTiernan from Ballymote who carded 41 pts to take first place while it was great to see Anthony Kelly getting into the frame with a second place finish.
Wednesday’s open competition was won by Paul McGonnigle (21) with 42pts while Co Sligo members Hugh Arnold (10) and John O Connor (25) were second and third with 41 and 35 pts respectively. Flogas sponsored Thursday’s competition which was won by Castle Dargan’s Terry Duffy (4) who completed the course in two under par gross which included an eagle on the par four 15th hole.
Adrian Barrett (16) was second with 39 pts while Declan Gilmartin (19) was third on 38 pts. Heineken sponsored Friday’s single stableford event which was won by Ray O Grady (6) with 40 pts which included four birdies on the outward 9 while Stephen Smyth (7) had 38 pts and beat Martin O Dea (10) after a count back. Mark Boyd (11) won Saturday’s competition with an excellent total of 46 pts. Eamon Brett (15) Castlewarren was second on 39 pts beating Declan Rooney (10) Strandhill after a count back. Another big field entered Sunday’s competition sponsored by Wassies Chipper and again high scores were the order of the day. The competition was won by Terry Duffy (4) who had another brilliant round of golf at Castle Dargan. Terry carded four birdies on the front nine and three on the back with out dropping a shot for a seven under par round and a total of 47 points.
Mark Boyd (10) continued where he left off on Saturday with a score of 45 points which would have been a winning score on any other day while Paul Little (14) carded 44 pts for a third place finish. Junior winners over the open week were Mark White, Kevin Broadrick, Ruriai O Connor and Dylan Mc Daniel.
Next weekend sees Mr Dermott Fallon’s Presidents day on Saturday with a club competition on Sunday. The time sheet is filling up fast and all interested in playing should contact the golf shop for available times. We wish Dermott a successful and enjoyable day. The draw for times and partners will take place on Thursday evening so all are asked to check with golf shop from Friday for details The Jack O Sullivan team ably led by Dave Donovan take on Enniscrone on Thursday evening with three matches at the Castle Dargan venue. We wish Dave and the team the very best of luck. The Connacht Shield team captained by Dermott Flynn take on Carrick on Shannon on Monday evening next with three matches away. This is their first outing of the year and we hope that they can get a good run going in this event. We would appreciate if members could come out and support the players in both these competitions.
Those playing over the past week or so would appreciate how well the course both looks and plays. The continued improvement of the greens, fairways and overall look of the course is a credit to Course Superintendent Graeme Beatt, EGS and the team of green keepers. Their hard work should loft us considerably up the list of the top courses in the country and in doing so, make it the must play course in the North West. There was a well attended presentation night on Friday last and we would like to thank all the sponsors for supporting Castle Dargan over the year and a special thank you to both John Clifford and Joe Mc Cann who came along and presented their prizes on the night.
We would like to welcome back Lady Captain Paula Daly and her husband Doctor John following their recent break and we hope that Paula enjoys the rest of her term at the helm of the ladies golf at Castle Dargan.
The junior academy continues this Thursday and it was great to see so many young golfers attending last weeks coaching. A special mention to Golf PRO Xavier and those who helped supervise and assist during the sessions. Well done to the lads who played in the Kenny Cup in Carrick-on-Shannon recently. The team consisted of Kevin Broderick, Johnny Quinn, James Fallon, Darren Conboy & Conor Mc Keon. Although they didn’t qualify for the finals, the team finished in a very commendable 5th position in the qualifiers. Congratulations to Eoin Carroll who finished joint 4th in the Connacht Closed U-15 Championship in Strandhill recently and we wish him well in the Leinster Open next week.
