‘Walsh decision a major boost’
The decision of manager Kevin Walsh to stay on as Sligo manager for another two years provided the junior squad with a timely boost ahead of Saturday’s All-Ireland Final said victorious captain, Jason Farrell, after their six point win over Kerry at Pearse Stadium.
Goalkeeper Farrell was named as captain as injury ruled out Mark Quinn out of the game and he became only the second Sligo skipper ever to lift an All- Ireland trophy.
"It’s not every day you win an All- Ireland Final. Everyone who went out on the pitch took their opportunity and I can’t fault any man," said a delighted Farrell at the finish.
The Sligo captain felt the rain probably suited the Yeats men more than their opponents, but stated that Walsh’s charges were in control of the game and deserved their victory.
"Fair play to all the lads and credit to the management team. Kevin re-joining last week lifted everything at training and everything kicked off from there," he added.
Farrell believes Walsh’s decision will stabilise Sligo football for the next two years and paid tribute to all those involved in the panel for deliving the first All-Ireland Championship since 1935.
