Sweeney in contention to face Wexford
Kenneth Sweeney, the talentedGeevagh forward, is incontention for a place in theSligo team to face Wexford inround three of the Allianz NationalFootball League at Wexford Parkon Sunday.
Sweeney missed Sligo’s victory overLouth three weeks ago but is now back tofull fitness and his availability will givemanager, Kevin Walsh, and his selectors anadded option when they finalise their teamlater in the week.
Although Walsh expressed some concernover his side’s overall performance againstLouth, he is not anticipating too manychanges for Sunday’s tough assignment inWexford.
‘We’re not pressing the panic button; therewill not be wholesale changes’, he insisted.‘While I was disappointed with some aspectsof our performance against Louth, therewere also many positives which we can buildon. Even though we didn’t play particularlywell and a number of things went against us,we still had enough character to dig out awin in difficult circumstances and that isvery encouraging’
With both sides having one win to theircredit in Division Three, Sunday’s gamecould be a defining fixture, even at this earlystage of the season. Another loss for eitherside would leave them with a lot of ground tomake up in a very competitive division.‘It’s a big game, there’s no question aboutthat’, agreed Walsh.
‘Wexford got a good winthe last day and they will be going intoSunday’s game with a lot of confidence butwe’re in reasonably good form too so we’relooking forward to the challenge’The Sligo boss is expecting a very toughgame but belives his team are good enough tosecure the points if they hit their best form.‘No team in the country would find it easyin Wexford. They have a very good homerecord so we know we will have to be at ourbest to get any sort of result. We try to winevery game we play and we’ll go to Wexfordin a very positive frame of mind, whileaccepting that it will be a difficult game towin’, Walsh added.
Apart from Eamonn O’Hara, who is stillruled out with an arm injury and asuspended Adrian Marren, Walsh will have afull squad to choose from.
And no doubt a key figure in Sligo’sstrategy will be corner-forward, David Kelly, fresh from winning a Sigerson Cup medalwith DCU last week-end.
‘I was delighted for David’, said Walsh. ‘Ifever a player deserved to win a major honour,it’s David. He had a great year for us lastseason and he’s started 2010 very well. Hisachievement with DCU in the Sigerson willgive our squad a great lift’
