Sligo celebrate historic victory
Sligo’s great GAA famine is over. It may have only been a junior title on offer but that doesn’t in any way diminish the sense of joy in the county this week after Sligo’s thrilling win over mighty Kerry in the All-Ireland junior championship final at Pearse Stadium on Saturday last.
It is the first time since 1935 that Sligo have won an All-Ireland title and there was no doubting the merit of the famous victory as Kevin Walsh’s team outplayed their more celebrated opponents with a gritty display.
It was the perfect way for the county to celebrate the news that Walsh is to stay on as manager of the senior team for another two years and several of the players involved in last Saturday’s historic triumph said that the Galwayman’s decision was a huge motivational boost ahead of the final.
‘Every All-Ireland title is hard won and the players involved deserve tremendous credit for all the work they’ve put in all year. It ws a very nice way to end a good year for Sligo football’, said the triumphant manager.
