Castleconnor

LAST Tuesday was a sad day in the parish. In the morning we were to hear the sad news that our long serving club president Mick Gillard had died. Mick was known to all in the club for years as the man who always had the cold and fresh spring water whenever a player looked for it.

When Mick got first involved with the club it was when his lads, Sean, Michael, Joe, Bosco and Pascal started to make the club underage teams and many the time his trusty Morris Minor acted as team bus. Whenever there was fundraising or work on the pitch required, Mick was the first there and never had to be asked. Mick became the club president in 1990, a role he never relinquished. The club sends condolences to Maureen, Ann and the boys and extended family our condolences. The club and local community have lost a great servant.

On Tuesday evening the devastating news of little Robyn Cooney's most untimely death reached us. Anyone who attended underage training on Friday evenings or any U10 blitzes this year where her brother Patrick was playing knew Robyn, one of the happiest children we ever knew. Our condolences to Martin, Margaret, Carly and Patrick and their extended family and friends.

Casteconnor GAA Lotto is now worth €15150 but as a mark of respect to those who died this week it was cancelled this Friday. The next draw will now take place next Friday night in Mahoneys bar.

On Wednesday evening at the community centre at 7:30pm this years Bord na nóg meeting will take place. Chairman Paul Kilcullen asks all parents and those who are interested in getting involved to please attend. At 8:30pm the monthly club meeting cancelled last week as a mark of respect to our club President Mick Gillard will take place.

Congratulations to former senior team player Karl Tuffy and his wife Ellen Lacey on their wedding at Christmas in Wexford.
