ST. MARY’S: The Club medal presentation night took place in the Glasshouse Hotel last Friday night. In what was a very successful and enjoyable night, medals were presented by County Players, Stephen Coen and Mark Breheny and also by County Chairman, John Murphy. Many thanks to the Glasshouse Hotel.

Clodagh Murray is travelling to Haiti in April to assist Haven Partnership with the rebuilding project after the devastation caused by the recent earthquakes. As part of her fundraising efforts we held a fundraising raffle at our medal presentation in the Glasshouse Hotel on Friday night last. All donations and contributions will go towards the Haven Partnership rebuilding project in Haiti and thanks to everyone who supported the raffle.

The Saturday Morning Coaching commences on April 10th 2010. Any player that didn’t get a jacket last year can still get one if they contact Joe Campbell.

We wish Summerhill College the very best in the Connaught Senior ‘A’ Final against St. Gerard’s Castlebar in Charlestown on Saturday next at 2.30pm. It is 25 years since they last won the ‘A’ Final and the team included many Club Members such as Tommy Breheny, John Clifford, Declan Conlon, Pauric Oates, Ciaran Ryan and Martin Keaney. We also wish St. Attracta’s well in the ‘B’ Final at the same venue. Well done to the Summerhill College 2nd year team who have qualified for the semi final of the 'A' Championship after beating St. Muredach's, Ballina on a scoreline of 4-12 to 1-3. Well done to panel members Cian Breheny (captain) 1-6, Dylan Corcoran 0-2, Jake Dykes 0-3, Aaron McGoldrick, Stephen Henry, Ryan McManus, Gerard O’Kelly Lynch, Peter Kelly, Liam Henry and Rory Molloy. The Semi-Final is on Tuesday 16th march v Headford.Best of luck. Good luck to Summerhill College in the first years ‘A’ final due to be played shortly. Many of our successful U-12 and U-14 Feile teams are part of the college panel.

We lost narrowly to Eastern Harps at home on Sunday morning last in the Division 1 League on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-12. The Senior side face St. Molaise Gaels on Saturday evening in Kent Park (Throw-in 5.00pm) in the last round of the Kiernan Cup. Training continues on Tuesday and Friday evenings with all Senior and Junior Panellists expected to attend. Members of the Senior Squad attended a Motivational Seminar at the weekend in Westport. We offer our condolences to Rosaleen O’Grady on the death of her mother Rose Foley, Treacy Avenue last week and to Margot Farrell on the death of her mother in Tipperary recently. Sympathies to the Lipsett and Fitzpatrick families on the death of Liam Lipsett Senior of Coolaney. Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Philip Ward, Fatima Avenue. Philip was a valued member of a Community Employment Group who constructed the terracing at Kent Park approximately 10 years ago.

The return of Michael Bree, a member of the 2001 Senior Championship winning team, to take up work in Sligo this week is a great boost for the Community. His musical and footballing skills will surely be put to good use and its good to see locals returning to the area in these recessionary times.

We will be having a "spring clean" around our club grounds on Saturday 13th March from 10.30am – 11.30am. We would ask all club members to come along for the hour and help tidy up around our club grounds in advance of the sporting season starting in earnest. The Club’s website is live at http://stmarys.sligo.gaa.ie/. The Club’s email address is stmarys.sligo@gmail.com.

ST. FARNAN’S LADIES

The St. Farnan's Novelty Act Bandwagon is on the road again, this time in Scór Sinsear, after victory in the Co. Finals in Gurteen Hall on Saturday night last. The cast of Teresa Dunne, Sean KIlgannon, Frances Hanley, Emer Connolly and Bernie Mullarkey coped admirably with the enforced late withdrawal of their colleague, Rory Kelly, and will now go on to represent the club in the Connacht Finals in Loughrea, Co. Galway on Sat. week next, March 20th. Also representing the club on the night were Sean Kilgannon in the Recitation / Storytelling section and the Quiz team consisting of Frances Hanley, Kieran O'Connor and Martin Mulligan who shared top spot with St. Molaise Gaels but were unfortunate to lose to the North Sligo club in the Tie Breakers.

FRIENDS OF SLIGO FOOTBALL

Sligo suffered their second defeat of the League when going down away to Wexford last Sunday. This was probably one of the worst displays from Sligo for sometime. We wish a speedy recovery to Eamonn Mullen and Charlie Harrison, who were injured during the game and hope to see a return to winning ways at home next Sunday. Congratulations to Sligo star, David Kelly, who was a vital member of the DCU team, which won the Sigerson cup recently. David played a key role in this success particularly in the semi final when he gave a 5 star performance. He succeeds other Sligo greats like Hugh McGonigle, who captained UCG to victory in the 50s , Paddy Henry and Donal Brennan with Maynooth , Martin McCarrick, UCG, Mark Brehony Sligo IT and Noel Maguire UCD.

Congratulations to Summerhill College and St Attractas, who have qualified for the Connaught Colleges finals of their respective competitions. Both teams did it the hard way having gone to extra time. Summerhill seemed to be in trouble 4 points down with only 2 minutes left but once again they found their goal touch and over ran their opponents in extra time. St Attractas also defeated Rice College a few years ago on their way to All Ireland glory. It is not often 2 Sligo colleges defeat Mayo opposition in the penultimate stages of a competition in the same week and we wish both teams the best of luck in a very attractive double header in Charlestown next weekend, when hopefully a big crowd will be there to cheer them on.

There was mixed luck for St Attractas ladies as the footballers lost out to Tuam but the Basketballers qualified for an All Ireland final following a comprehensive win over Wexford opposition and we wish them best of luck as St Attractas seek an All Ireland victory. It should be borne in mind that many of these girls are involved in both teams so it is a supreme effort.

Congratulations to John Hughes on his nomination for a GAA Presidents award. Few people in Sligo have made such a contribution to the GAA at youth level in particular and the community in general and I am sure it is no coincidence that Geevagh has been in the ascendancy in recent years in ladies and gents football. We extend sympathy to the family of Liam Lipsett, Coolaney, who died recently. He was father of Robert Lipsett corner back on Connaught minor champions in 1968 and Connaught Senior champions in 1975. The Lipsett family have a strong tradition in GAA and both Robert and his sister Rita have been supporters of Friends of Sligo football in Dublin over the years. The Sligo Association are having a race night in Dublin on 16th March in aid of the Morrisson Teach Ceoil in Riverstown and I am sure they would appreciate all support.
