Threw mobiles in river

Wednesday February 01 2012

A Fifteen-year-old youth and another young man took twelve mobile phones valued at €2,250 from a local shop after walking through an unlocked door and later threw them in a river, Judge Kevin Kilrane heard at Sligo Court.

The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, told Judge Kilrane that he had now "stopped the messing" and he also apologised to his mother before the court.

Inspector Paul Kilcoyne explained that while the Meteor shop at O'connell Street was 'closed', the door had been left open and the youth entered the premises.

Twelve mobile phones were taken and the youth was identified on CCTV. A search of the defendant's address led to one phone being recovered.

Defending solicitor Mr. Gerry Mcgovern said the shop door had been open and there was no one inside.

"It was like letting a young man into a sweet shop," Mr. Mcgovern added.

The youth and the other young man had just started putting phones in their pockets and after getting messages they had panicked and threw the phones in the river.

Judge Kilrane said he would give the defendant a chance and put the matter back for monitoring to June 28th next, with Gardai given liberty to re-enter the case if there was any further trouble in the interim.
