Trade unions back new 'Love Sligo' loyalty card

A new loyalty card scheme has been launched for Sligo's trade union members with the aim of protecting jobs. Each Union member will be issued with the new "Love Sligo" loyalty card with the idea being to encourage those union members living and working in Sligo town and county to keep their business and shopping local in a bid to boost the local economy and to protect local jobs.

Judge casts an eye on Lissadell estate

High Court judge Bryan McMahon spent several hours inspecting Lissadell estate during his visit there on Friday last. The Judge made the trip as part of the hearing into a dispute over alleged rights away at the North Sligo residence which is own by barristers, Edward Walsh and his wife, Constance Cassidy.

Future of community companies remains uncertain, meeting hears

THE THREE Community Development Programme (CDP's) companies serving the north Leitrim area will remain open for the moment the recent North Leitrim Community Development Network meeting in Manorhamilton's Bee Park Community Centre was told. But the future of the CDPs - the North Leitrim Women's Centre, Lough Allen CDP and Community Connections - is very uncertain following last year's Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs decision to totally re-organise this sector and shut down a number of CDPs. It is expected that many of the functions of the CDPs will be allocated to the Leitrim Development Company by the end of the year. The future of the CDP workers from an employment stand point, as well as the services they currently provide under the new set up is unknown, which is a matter of major concern. Also uncertain is where Community Connections workers and the services it currently provides will be transferred to whether to the Cavan or Leitrim Development Companies after the new set up comes into operation since Community Connections is based in Blacklion but serves north Leitrim as well as west Cavan. The North Leitrim Women's Centre will have until July to come up with its integration plan with the Leitrim Development Company and when that is implemented it remains to be seen how many of the Centre's services will operate out of Manorhamilton and if any of its services will be shut down or not. The meeting decided that the Network should have the issues regarding the CDPs clarified as soon as possible. A MEETING of the Cross County N16/A4 Upgrade Lobby Group with representatives of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland Departments of Transport will take place in the Rainbow Centre, Glenfarne on Thursday, January 28. CLUB CHLUAINÍN representative, Mary McFadden told the Network meeting that the Club Chluainín Active Age Group weekly meetings resumed on Tuesday, January 26 in the Glens Centre after the Christmas/New Year break. Meetings between Club Chluainín and their counterparts from Irvinstown, Co. Fermanagh take place in Blacklion on particular Saturdays under the auspices of the Peace III Programme. Ideas for a work plan have been put forward by Club Chluainín members recently but funding has been cut lately and this has hampered the Active Age Group's operations. New members who have returned from abroad to live in the Manorhamilton area have joined Club Chluainín in the past few months. Some Club Chluainín members have been refused security alarms after applying to the scheme, which provides them. IN A report to the Network meeting on the Fairgreen Residents Association Tony Daly stated that painting had taken place in the area under a local improve plan measure. He also stated that the Fairgreen Residence Association had been actively involved in the recently formed Manorhamilton Tidy Towns Committee. Tony expressed concern that the County Council appeared to be on the brink of ceasing their Fairgreen grass cutting programme. KINLOUGH GLENVIEW and Meadow Court Residence Association representative Thomas Kelly informed the Network members that four Association members had attended estate management training in Fermanagh in recent times. ROSSINVER DEVELOPMENT Association representative Philip Rooney reported to the Network meeting that a new FÁS community employment scheme had commenced in the area. AT THE recent Club Chluainín Progressive '25' Card Drive in the Áras Breffni Community Centre the first prize was shared after it concluded in a battle royal between two very experienced partnerships. When the dust settled the top honours went to the Mary Gilgunn & Patrick McGourty partnership and the Michael Rooney & Peter Feely partnership. Some very astute play by the Margaret Sweeney and Nan Gilgunn saw the second prize make its way at the end of the night to the very knowledgeable partnership that very well represented Skreeny & Castle Street, respectively. Seán McPartlan won the first Club Chluainín raffle prize and Pádraig Keegan took the runner-up prize.
