Riverstown woman, Carmel Devaney, aged 73, has scooped an All Ireland Inspirational Life Award for being an outstanding role model and an example of an active and inspirational life at an award ceremony in Belfast, hosted by BT. Carmel was presented with her award on Monday, along with two other winners, by Senator Mary White and Dame Joan Harbison, for her role as chairperson of the Athlone Careers Support Group and for living a life dedicated to caring for others, including family and friends, over the past 20 years.

Preparations for the 24th consecutive South Sligo Summer School in Tubbercurry are progressing apace. Dates for the 24th year are - Sunday July 11th to Saturday July 17th inclusive. Queries regarding the school from abroad are increasing daily and auger well for another successful week. As usual classes will be provided daily in the following: Fiddle, Flute, Button and Piano Accordeon, Tin Whistle, Bodhran, Traditional Guitar, Banjo, Concertina, Harp, Uilleann Pipes, Sean Nos and Traditional singing, Lilting, Sean Nos and Set Dancing. Organised by four 3rd year Public Relations and Event Management students, Cora O'Brien, Lisa Hannon, Michelle Mc Kenzie and Jane Corcoran in IT Sligo, the one night showcase takes place in the idyllic setting of Calry Church on Friday 12th of March at 8.30pm. The concert will feature Tommy Byrne and his band 'The Big Jigs' and also the Irish Traditional Music society in IT Sligo. All proceeds from the event are going to the North West Hospice.
