Retired clergyman killed in crash

The elderly man who died following a single vehicle road traffic accident on the Knappagh Road on Monday has been named as retired Church of Ireland Canon Fred Gillmor of Strandhill.

Canon Gillmor (80) was removed to Sligo General Hospital following the incident in which the motor car he was driving collided with a stone wall at Knappagh Road approximately 11.15 am His condition deteriorated on Monday evening.

Fire crews and emergency services attended at the scene, which was technically examined. The road was closed for a time following the accident and the County Sligo Coroner was informed.

Canon Gillmor retired in 2003 and his last posting was in Tubbercurry/ Killoran. He was ordained a deacon in the Church of Ireland in 1962 and a Priest a year later. He lived at Carrowdubh, Strandhill.
