Sligo GAA is ready to lodge a planning application with Sligo County Council for the development of a €3 million state-of-the art training centre.

The ambitious project is earmarked for a 8.9 hectare site at Scardenmore and Drinaghas on the Strandhill Road. The centrepiece of the development will be a 1,337 sq.me. Centre of Excellence building which will include four changing rooms, medical facilities, administration rooms, gymnasium and meeting rooms.

Three full-size playing pitches, one of which will be an all-weather facility, will also be provided. Two of the pitches will have floodlighting.

Car and bus-parking facilities are included in the overall development which will be accessed by a new road and entrance at the Sligo/Strandhill Road.

While the timescale for the completion of the new Centre will be determined by the planning process, Sligo County Board is hopeful the new facility will be up and running by the end of the year.

The provision of dedicated training facilities for couonty teams has been an objective of the County Board for a number of years with previous efforts to establish facilities and Collooney and Coolera failing to come to fruition. However, the Board is now ready to press ahead with fresh plans for the project and a planning application will be lodged within the next week.
