Sligo Bay RNLI station has said the quick response in erecting numbers on the pillars marking the route from Coney Island to the mainland will greatly improve. safety there. Thanking the county council, Willie Murphy, Lifeboat Operations manager, explained that the work was undertaken under the supervision of Mr Gary Salter, Senior Executive Engineer.
Each year the RNLI lifeboat is called out to assist people who have been cut off by the incoming tide, as it is very easy to misjudge how quickly the tide can cover the strand.
People climb onto the pillars to await assistance and now thanks to Sligo County Council they can relay the number of the pillar to the emergency services which will greatly assist in conducting a fast rescue.
Mr. Murphy added: "We are very grateful and impressed by the cooperation and speed of the Council in this matter, the numbering of these pillars will assist us greatly in reaching a casualty quickly."
It is important for people to remember to always check the tide times and ensure that they stay close to the pillars at all times.
