'Any building here won't be accepted'
THE PEOPLE of Cranmore would "totally and absolutely" oppose any building on a newly created green area in the Estate, the Borough Council was warned.
Councillor Declan Bree made his comments as the proposed naming of the green area after two former community activists was again deferred with officials maintaining that the Cranmore Masterplan was not sufficiently progressed to identify an exact green area and that it must be outlined on a map before a plebiscite to call it 'The Gillen Finnegan Peace Park' be conducted.
Councillors were informed that the green area concerned is that on the site on which units of social housing had been demolished as an early intervention under the Cranmore Regeneration Scheme and through an agreement between the Regeneration Officer and the community, access was allowed onto the space in a regulated manner and is controlled and limited.
The area is zoned 'residential' by the Borough Council.
Director of Services Paula R. Gallagher said they would not know what area was exactly going to be green until the Cranmore Masterplan was completed.
Where the houses had been demolished the green area had been introduced as a temporary measure to make it look more attractive.
"You can't have a plebiscite without a map and an exact location," she added.
She was responding to Clr. Bree who had proposed that a plebiscite to allow local residents decide whether the green area be named ' The Gillen Finnegan Peace Park' be held in March, following a unanimous decision by Councillors in November that it go ahead.
Councillor Bree expressed concern that there was a suggestion that something could be built on the area and said that the people of Cranmore would not tolerate this.
